Growing bonsai is a hobby that originated in China hundreds of years ago and has since spread throughout the world and has become a widely enjoyed passtime in many countries, a bonsai tree is basically a tree that is shaped and formed to create a desired look while also maintaining the tree's growth, it is a hobby that is very fun, enjoyable, fulfilling and rewarding, the best thing about it is you can have a really great time growing the tree and then show your trees off to all your friends and family and let them admire your efforts and the beauty you have created.
In this article I am going to share with you some "secrets" of growing bonsai that you really should know about if you want to grow your own trees, growing bonsai is not the most difficult thing to do but it can be quite hard to get it exactly as you want it unless you know what you're doing, if you know what you're doing then you can create really amazingly beautiful trees for your home.
The first thing you should know about is that not all trees are going to be ideal for bonsai, some trees are much better to use than others and it is important that you have a good tree before you start to put effort into growing it and shaping it, you should look for plants that have the following characteristics:
Small leaves
Attractive bark
Good branch structure
All parts of the tree should be in perfect scale with the size of it, the leaves should be small or they may look out of porportion with the rest of the tree later in growth, the bark should be attractive and the trunk should have girth but also be in scale with the rest of the tree.
The original look of the tree is important as it will have an affect on how it looks when it is grown and developed into a bonsai tree, make sure it is attractive and a good scale, otherwise it may not turn out as you would like it.
The second thing you should know about is to have a desired outcome for your tree before you even begin, growing bonsai is all about shaping and forming the tree to give it the stunning affect that you want and if you don't have an idea in mind of how you would like it to look then you really don't have anything to work on.
What I would advice you to do is have a look at other developed bonsai trees and get an idea of how the different looks appear and which of them you like the most, try to get a picture in your mind of what your tree will look like when it is finished, not what you think it will look like but what you want it to look like, this will give you a picture to work for and develop your tree around.
